I fully realize that we are only in day two of free agency and that the two big names have yet to sign, but having your favorite team's GM sound so complacent with falling so short and being so complacent with a buy out of Joslin and re-signing moody softness as your best moves on defense is just so disappointing.

We also:

1. traded Dumoulin (who it should be said didn't crack the Charlotte lineup after being signed -- though it was only 3 games)
2. traded the #8 pick (though this wouldn't have been a this-year D-man in any case)
3. have a year older Ryan Murphy and Bobby Sanguinetti

Point #3 could be more or less significant, depending on how these players progress over the summer. Still, it should be something of a real competition on 5-8 through camp and into the season:

1. Pitkanen
2. Gleason
3. Harrison
4. Faulk
5. McBain
6. Corvo
7. Sanguinetti
8. Murphy

Our top 4? I'm pretty pleased with that group actually. (Pitkanen remains a mystery at times, admittedly... But I do think he'll flourish more under Muller. At least I hope so...)

Yup: Carle, Gilroy, Lepisto, Roszival, Spacek, and Salvador, all have something interesting. That said, I have no idea where Murphy is at developmentally, or Keegan Lowe, Mark Alt, Danny Biega, Austin Levi, Tyler Stahl, Rissanen, Michal Jordan, Bellemore, Beau Schmitz, Krueger, on and on. I liked what little we saw of Bobby Sanguinetti late last year, FWIW. None of the most recent draft picks impressed me at the rookie camp in a "wow" kind of way.

The problem is that is not our top 4, according to JR. He brought Corvo back because he is a right shot and plays well with Gleason (and according to Corvo, the fit like an old shoe--lots of holes, soft, and a little stinky).

So the Top 6 is more like:

1. Gleason
2. Corvo
3. Faulk
4. Harrison
5. Pitkanen
6. McBain

(I slotted Joni so low because I don't see him playing with Faulk or Harrison).

Ugh
