Default Norfolk Admirals in the Calder Cup Finals

I picked up a couple of tickets for Friday night's game. They are very reasonably priced and there are plenty of tickets available through the Admirals website. It may be my last chance to see live hockey for a few months, so I gotta do it.

How was the game? That Admirals team is tough.

The game was pretty good. I was thinking they may do some special things with it being the Calder Cup Finals, but it was about like every other minor league hockey game I've been to. The great seats I bought turned out to be not so great. We were about 6 rows up behind the benches. As it turned out, the two rows in front of us were at the same level, so all we could see was some helmets skating by. We moved at the first stoppage to the upper level and all was well.

The refs tried to keep too tight of a leash on things. They jumped right in on every group hug and the guys wanted to go. They finally got to have a fight late in the 3rd. It was a parade back and forth to the penalty box all night.

Alexandre Picard is on the Admirals. If you have a good memory, you might remember the cup of coffee he had with the Canes in 09-10. He and a 2010 2nd rounder came over from Ottawa in the Matt Cullen trade. That 2nd round pick was latter traded for the rights to Riley Nash. Picard skated 9 games in a Canes sweater.

They're showing this series on the CBS Sports Network 1537 TWC. Game 3 is on right now.

Yeah, that was a shocker. We had to run it back a couple times to see that again.

Goalie went out to play the dumped-in puck but it bounced and went into the empty net. Puck Daddy has an article/video.

Statement from the AHL:

Quote:
AHL statement regarding Game 3
June 8, 2012

TORONTO ... American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews has issued the following statement:

“We have spoken with Toronto Marlies management and confirmed that a rules interpretation error by the on-ice officials occurred on the Norfolk Admirals’ overtime goal during Game 3 of the Calder Cup Finals.

“On the play, a dump-in from center ice by a Norfolk player caromed off a stanchion and into the Toronto net. The correct application of AHL Rule 83.4 would have negated the Norfolk goal due to a delayed offside call.

“As AHL By-Laws do not allow for any change to the final result of a game based on an incorrect rule interpretation, the result of the game stands.”

It's definitely on the linesman and referees (and other officials in the arena, etc.) that this happened.

But isn't it also the coaches and players on the Marlies to immediately (before the game is "final" final) bring this to the officials' attention? It appeared to me that the Marlies coaching staff nearly sprinted into the tunnel, leaving some players in shock on the ice, alone. If a coach brings this rule to the referee's attention, who knows, maybe they get the call right before the arena clears.

The TV announcers didn't say one word about it, either, showing the hockey IQ of your average AHL announcers I guess.

(Side note: Mike Zigomanis sighting in the replay.)

Yeah, I was surprised. Many of the fans were certainly aware based on my interpretation of what I saw on the broadcast.

That was difficult to say the least. Terrible way to lose a Calder Cup Finals game.

Dave Andrews, the prez of AHL is going to be on with XM Home Ice to "explain"..... I just don't know what else can be said there if there's no real recourse. Right?
